Summary

Growing up in a society that hates spellcasters, Nox works outside the law to give people like him a better lot in life, providing food, shelter, and even employment. How? Selling a genetic modifier called asterite to fund his criminal syndicate.

Fast forward 20 years and deadly mutations are rampant in the very people he was trying to protect. He sets his sights on Gemini Hospital, whose research has been instrumental in curing mutations, to get their formula for himself and slow the damage.

Themes

Beyond its surface premise, Midwinter is a comic that aims to explore facets of morality, societal expectation, redemption, and the relationships forged throughout.

We like to keep Midwinter’s tone balanced. You can go in expecting a touch of many things–action, comedy, romance, drama, horror–and of course, a lot of cool magic and technology!

Setting

Midwinter is set in an alternate Earth, 50-100 years ahead of the current day. In many countries, magic and technology mesh, while others take to one extreme or the other: one example being the comic’s core setting of Polaris, Helior. Polaris is a dense, industrial hive city where cyberization is a normal part of every day life while magic is highly regulated and demonized. Thanks to this, the city’s underbelly of organized crime is thriving, taking in any outcast who has felt neglected by the world.

History

This comic is the collaborative effort of ReVision Studios LLC, a team of five indie creators with the desire to make nuanced, diverse content that pushes the boundaries of existing tropes.

Midwinter was first created in 2011 when Joanna Wong and Kasper Swain reconnected early that year. They wrote the first draft within nine months and later began the editing phase in 2012 with the help of Mark Maiefski, who filled in the gaps and expanded the genre into science fiction. Since then, the team has grown and shifted over the years, but has settled into being comprised of the three owners and five assistants, all of which are critical to Midwinter’s success.

Midwinter has been in production since the first issue debuted at Anime Nebraskon 2013. With its success in the Midwestern convention circuit to back it, Midwinter was later posted online as a webcomic in 2015 and is now mirrored on Tapas and Webtoons in addition to its printed copies.

Midwinter FAQ

How often does a new issue of Midwinter come out?

When the main artist is working full time on it, we can put out a new issue (40 comic pages) every 4-6 months. If she’s not funded and requires outside work, production drops to one issue per year. We’re doing our best to make this a sustainable project!

What about the volumes?

A volume is compiled every 4 issues, so the time it takes can vary. Our goal is to have a new one out every two years, though! At our current pace, the next trade (Volume 2) will release in summer 2019.

I love Midwinter! What's the best way to support you?

Thank you so much! Really, anything from supporting us on Patreon to buying a book from our shop would go a long way in keeping us going. It all funnels back into ReVision Studios and helps us pay for artists, printing, events, and more. Check out our support page for some ideas on how you can help.

I can't support you monetarily right now. What else can I do?

Not a problem! I’m glad you like Midwinter enough to want to support it. If you don’t have the funds, you can always share our website on social media. Tell your followers a little bit about why you like Midwinter and tag us in it! Any reach we get helps tremendously, and word of mouth is one of the most effective ways to support the content you love!

I'm an artist/writer/editor! Are you hiring?

We are not actively looking to fill any positions right now, but we are always on the lookout for contractors! If you’d like to be notified when jobs open up, feel free to contact us with a brief list of your skills and a link to your portfolio so we can put you on a list.

I'm looking to have a comic made. Do you do work for hire?

Yes, we do! We’d be happy to hear from you. If you contact us about a job, make sure you have the basics covered in your first email: Your name, name of your project, a short summary, estimated page count, and deadline. Also feel free to include if you would like this to be a strictly-for-hire situation or if you’re interested in a partnership where we offer editorial services and collaborate more closely. Our page rate is between $200-$400 based on complexity and partnership agreements. Please do not contact us if this is not within your budget.

I'm making my own comic/novel/game, will you take a look and critique it?

Unfortunately, while we would love to help, we don’t have the time to do so for free. If you don’t mind spending a little money, you can hire our editor Mark to take a look at it for you! Just shoot him an email. We promise the fees will be reasonable.
